Scarpa have been making footwear since the 40s and more recently have started producing high quality walking boots. While most gear manufacturers have long since moved their factories to China or Easern Europe, Scarpa walking boots are still made in Italy which means the build quality is very high.

Scarpa are best known for:
  • Scarpa Lightweight Hiking Boots - for low altitude walking on good paths such as the West Highland Way, either the Hydrogen or the Nitro would be suitable.
  • Scarpa Walking Boots (2 - 3 Seasons) - for general purpose hill-walking, Scarpa provide both leather and fabric alternatives. If you prefer a leather boot, the two most popular choices are the Ranger (GTX version) and the Trek GTX. In terms of fabric boots, the Zero Gravity range is critically acclaimed.
  • Scarpa 4 Season Boots - Probably the most respected brand in the world for four season boots with the possible exception of La Sportiva. For 4 season use in the UK, the Manta M4 and SL M3 are refined with each version and continue to win awards left, right and centre. For high-altitude climbing / trekking in the Alps, Nepal etc., Scarpa produce traditional plastic boots (such as the Omega Thermo and Vega) as well as lightweight fabric alternatives (such as the Charmoz GTX and Scarpa Freney XT). The latter category is becoming more and more popular as people realise that warmth, protection and ridigidy doesn't always require a plastic outer.
  • Scarpa Approach Shoes - not renowned for approach trainers, Scarpa have only recently ventured into this market (also with the likes of North Face and Salomon). Most of their approach shoes are derived from the Zero Gravity range of boots. For example, the Goretex-lined Enigma XCR is a version of the ZG65.
  • Scarpa Rock Climbing Shoes - Scarpa has built-up a good reputation within the rock climbing community by providing a range of climbing shoes suitable for beginners right through to the more experienced climber. Over the last few years, the Vantage has been the most well regarded in terms of performance and value for money.
