Popular brands in this section... Lightweight Hiking Boots - FootnotesLightweight walking boots are great for low level walks and for use in the mountains during the summer months. Good lightweight boots should have a firm heel that holds the ankle in place, a tow bumper for kicking rocks, good underfoot cushioning for shock absorption, a sole that grips well, an easy to adjust lacing system and a supportive shaped footbed.
Waterproof / Breathable Linings:
More lightweight walking boots have waterproof / breathable (W/B) linings. Since they first appeared these linings have become more breathable and more durable but they can still make your feet overhead in hot weather (and the lining may not last as long as the rest of the boot). A W/B lining makes a thin, light boot warmer. Those who suffer form cold feet may welcome a lining as an aid to warmth. On the downside, if a boot gets wet it can take much longer to dry if it has a W/B lining.
Fabric or Leather Walking Boots?
Fabric boots are the most common type of lightweight walking boot. These usually have leather or suede panels in abrasion areas and to support the soft fabric, though stiff synthetic materials are sometimes used, particularly in the very lightest models. Fabric boots are made from panels of material so there are usually plenty of seams. These are potential leak and wear points though this shouldn't be a problem in well-made boots. Leather boots may be made of stitched pieces of leather or a single piece. The latter is the toughest and most watertight construction as there are few seams, usually just at the heel. If you want a boot that will last then look for a one-piece leather one (such as the Raichle Mountain Guide GTX). Looks for a bit of weight too. Generally speaking, the very lightest boots won't last as long as ones weighing a few hundred grams more. Even lightweight walking boots get heavy use and very light fabrics just aren't that tough.
