Popular brands in this section... Sandals and Flip Flops - FootnotesWhen the weather is hot, maximum breathability is required to keep your feet cool, comfortable and blister free. Walking sandals should offer the comfort, stability and grip of a conventional hiking shoe in a style that is more practical for the summer or warmer climates. Here's a quick rundown on what you should be looking for in a walking sandal.
Midsole:
Grab the walking sandal by toe and heel, bend the toe towards the heel and then twist to toe while holding the heel stationary. Ideally you need the sole to be reasonably stiff, so you don't feel every stone under your foot, but you do want some flex at the toe.
Outsole:
Grab a pound coin and compare the thickness of the coin with the depth of the grooves on the sole unit. If the grooves are shallower than the thickness of a pound coin then the lugs won't provide much grip and they'll also wear down quickly.
Straps:
The straps are there to holkd your foot securely in the walking sandal, and they'll have either Velcro or quick-release buckles. The most important features are that you can adjust the straps to your feet and that they are lined with soft fabric, such as neoprene to prevent the rough ends and edges of the straps from digging into your feet and rubbing. The strapping systems may also protect the feet from knocks, particularly at the forefoot. Synthetic straps tend to dry faster and are more comfortable when wet than leather straps.
Fit:
The walking sandal should be a snug fit, and the sole should extend beyond the edges of your foot. Make sure there is enough adjustment in the straps to provide the perfect fit.
Cushioning:
You can judge how good the underfoot cushioning is by simply putting on the sandals, raising your heels and then thumping them down hard on the ground.
Footbed:
Look for some underfoot cushioning for the most comfort, while air channels reduce sweatiness underfoot. Some have an antibacterial treatment that inhibits the growth or odour-producing bacteria. A rim may also be incorporated to protect your toes from knocks and to stop stones from getting in under your feet so easily.
