With synthetic bags improving every year by using higher grade and better performing insulation, they are now able to offer higher levels of warmth at competitive prices. Synthetic sleeping bags are also capable of retaining their warmth when wet, making them a good choice for any travels in unpredictable weather.

Synthetics - An Introduction

Synthetic fills are less expensive than down buy bulkier and heavier for the same amount of warmth. Though very durable, they don't last as long as down. Like down they are cold to sleep in when wet but will dry quicker and are easier to clean. For people who are allergic to down, synthetic bags are a good alternative. Fortunately the performance of the best modern synthetics is now extremely high.

There are a large number of synthetic fibres available, offering differing degrees of warmth, durability, comfort and bulk. The loft of the fill is the major factor in determining the warmth but the quality of the fibre matters too. High quality fibres weigh less and pack up smaller for the same warmth than ones of lesser quality.

Construction

All synthetic fillings consist of layers of fibres called batts. The batts of fibres are layered together in loose slabs of material then stitched to a sheet of fabric to hold them in shape. The type of construction is as follows:

• Single Layer - A single layer of fill is stitched to the outer and inner fabric. Only suitable for summer bags.
• Double Offset - Two overlapping single layers cut out cold spots to improve insulation
• Shingle - The most effective method, overlapping pieces of fibre are sewn to both the outer and inner fabric to eliminate cold spots completely.
