Popular brands in this section... Down Sleeping Bags - FootnotesDown sleeping bags deliver better warmth for their weight than synthetic equivalents, compress into smaller stuff sacs and, with proper care and treatment, can last for a long time, making them a sound investment for the regular camper / traveller. Our range contains a varied selection of fill powers and weights to suit every requirement.
Down - An Introduction
Down is the highest preforming fill. It's warm, lightweight and compresses well. Down will also keep you comfortable over a wider range of temperatures than a synthetic fill. On the down side (no pun intended), it is more expensive. However, durability is very good and a down sleeping bag should last at least three times as long as a synthetic filled one, which makes the initial cost worthwhile.
The more volume a given weight of down will fill when allowed to expand or loft, the higher the quality is. The higher the fill power the better the down. Fill powers start at 550 and go up to 750+. Down is also graded by composition. 85/15 means that it is 85 percent down and 15 percent features. The higher the down content, the higher the quality and therefore the better performance you get for the weight.
Down Sleeping Bags - Construction
Down has to be retained in compartments in a sleeping bag to prevent it from migrating to one end. Dividing the down sleeping bag into channels does this effectively. The following channels are popular with different manufacturers:- Sewn Through - lightest, simplest and least insulating - ideal for summer bags.
- Box Wall - Baffles are added between fabric to allow the down to loft fully and improve insulation.
- Slant Box Wall - Baffles are angled to overlay stitching on inner and outer to prevent cold spots.
