Guide to Sleeping Bag Temperature / Season Ratings
The rating system exists because no single sleeping bag can be comfortable in the wide range of temperatures encountered over 4 seasons. A one-season bag is designed for typical summer conditions only (June to August). A two season bag covers late spring to early autumn when sub zero temperatures are very unlikely. Three season bags are for late autumn and early spring when the thermometer can dip below zero but can be used on mild winter nights. Four season bags are rated for cold winter nights. All these ratings are for UK valley use so in areas of the world where the mountains are higher and night temperatures lower, can extra season may be needed. These would be too warm for general UK use except for the coldest winter nights. Note that a four season bag will be too warm in summer for most people. Also, the more seasons a bag covers, the heavier and bulkier it is so buying a bag warmer than you need isn't advisble. Please note, the rating are a guide only. Different people feel the cold to varying degrees. Factors such as fatigue, eating a hot meal and the type of clothing worn will affect a person's warmth.
