Black Diamond Bod Reviews
Reviewed by Barry Hughes (Invergordon) on 2005-12-11:
General comments: I bought this harness on the advice of my ML instructor for a trip to the Alps for glacier crossing and to start some winter mountaineering in Scotland. He persuaded me it would be a better buy than the Alpine Bod as it is comfier and more versatile. I have since used it enough to realise this was good advice.
The waist belt is well padded and comfy enough for me. As a relative beginner I find it easy to put on and it adjusts easily. Now that I have taken up rock climbing I find the four gear loops plenty but for routes requiring more gear it may not be so good. The harness has belay loops front and back making it easy to tie into anchors or for lighter people belaying at the climbing wall.
As I said ,this was initially bought for a trip to the Alps and I found I barely noticed it while walking and the same when walking back to the car from the crag so this must be a good thing. I have found this harness comfy for abseiling as the wide, padded belt and the wide webbing leg loops don't dig in .
All in all ,this harness has done everything well so far although it maybe doesn't get the hardest life but I'm happy with it and it looks like it's well put together.
Pros: Comfy , simple to use for beginners and comes in plain black
Cons: Only comes in black

General comments: Bought this harness as a cheap replacement for an old one, mainly wanted to climb outdoors in it so choose an alpine one so wouldnt weight too much and obviously be quite cheap too.
I like this one alot, I#m particularly happy that it comes with a belay loop, quite rare on alpine harnesses but a nice touch.
Also has 4 gear loops, very useful for outdoors an dmore than enough to rack up on.
Its easy to adjust too, long waistband so should fit most people.
I like the snapbuckles on the legloops alot, really good with cold-hands, makes getting harness on a doddle and should be ideal for winter.
Only problem might be lack of padding, can chaff after a while,so probs best used for what it's intended for, as an alpine harness. Not particularly good for falling off alot on indoor route or sports routes.
Pros: Light
Cheap
Easy to get on with cold hands
Enough gear loops
Plenty of adjustment for clothes and stuff
Cons: No padding.
Maybe 2 more gear loops owuld be nice.

General comments: Another reviewer criticises this harness for lack of padding. I'm quite surprised at this, because mine is as well padded as any harness I've seen - including fleecy covering for the padding. Because of this I've found it pretty comfortable, although when you have several layers of clothing on it can get a bit ungainly. Maybe there is confusion between this and the Alpine version, which I've not used.
The plastic clips which hold the leg loops up look rather under-engineered at first glance, but in practice I've never had one come undone; and realistically, even if one did, it wouldn't be life or death. It does make it quite easy to put this harness on without getting totally tangled up in it, which is quite useful in the cold and dark. The main buckle also seems slightly unconventional the first time you use it, and I spent ages trying to feet the strap back through both metal loops, but it's easy when you RTFM, and totally secure.
The gear loops are adequate, and it's pretty comfy as harnesses go. Climbing harnesses are a pretty personal item, really, so it may not suit everybody, so probably best to try before you buy.
Pros: Comfy, well padded, easy to get into
Cons: Slightly unusual buckle could confuse somebody who hadn't worn this type of harness before.

General comments: Everything you want from a harness at an affordable price. I bought this harness 4 years ago and will be buying another when the time comes to replace it. It is quite simply the comfiest most practicle harness money can buy and its cheap, what more could you ask for?
It has a big wide padded waist belt that spreads your weight around making it more comfy. The only problem is that it could do with being a bit stiffer as the sides can bunch up causing discomfort. The leg loops are wide enough not to require padding and sit comfortably just under your bum.
The Black Diamond Bod is very quick to put on requiring one buckle to be threaded which can be a bit fiddly with gloves on and 2 clips to clip up and pull tight. The harness can also easily drop the bottom out for those essential moments out!!
It has 4 decent sized gear loops and a small haul loop at the back (this is ideal for your chalk bag and spare locking crabs. 4 gear loops are more than enough anyone who says otherwise is carrying too much gear. I have done 300m sustained E1 multi pitch routes with this harness and haven't had a problem with lack of gear loops. Maybe for extreme aid climbing you might want more but use a bandolier if thats a problem.
Pros: Comfy, easily adjustable and cheap, Everything you need from a harness
Cons: Waist strap can bunch up and main buckle is awkward with gloves.

General comments: Why over-complicate things? This is a very comfortable harness which will work in almost every situation at a great price. Padding is good where you need it, and the harness is very easy to use and put on, with the clips on the legs. Easily adjustable too - from indoor climbing to full-on winter mountaineering, the range of adjustment to allow for bulky clothing is excellent.
Pros: Comfort, price, ease of use.
Cons: None I can think of.

General comments: When i first tried this harness on, it was very comfy, (it has a nice fluffy lining).....
however, i went climbing with my friend (he's 6ft5 and 15stone) and when he fell id never experienced such a pain in my life! The leg loop dug into my leg so much that i physically felt sick!
I wouldnt recommend this harness if you're going to be catching alot of weight.
Pros: Nice fluffy lining, simple to fasten
Cons: Hurts when catching a fall!
