Silva Expedition 4MD Reviews

General comments: The best value - even if you haven't been issued it...
I got mine 8 years back and having done a bunch of mountains, a couple of trails and many exercises with it, it's still working fine with not even a bubble. The only damage is a dirtying of the yellow N backing. It's the definition of robust and practical. The romer has everything you want, it's in a sensible colour (none!) for reading a coloured map through it, the glow in the dark markers have lasted nearly a decade and can still be used fine. The baseplate is indeed large, but because of this you get a decent length to measure distances on the map with. The front edge is even narrowed so that a corner makes a perfect pointer to explain your position/route with.
Pros: Virtually indestructable.
Glow in the dark markers to line up at night.
Rubber feet provide great grip.
Never used a GPS, just this and a map...
Cons: Degrees shown inside the Mils, meaning they can be harder to read. Personally I work in Mils and then convert if necessary - obviously not a problem if you go for the normal Expedition 4 civilian version.
The price: not cheap for such a small thing, but worth it.
