The ideal bag for winter alpine climbers and mountaineers tackling the super-alpine peaks of Fitzroy and Cerro Torre, the Sanctuary 900 has also proved popular with customers intent on tackling 6000m peaks in the Himalaya, and Cerro Aconcagua in Argentina.

Macpac Sanctuary 900

   Macpac Sanctuary 900 Reviews

Reviewed by John Clark (Liverpool) on 2006-03-14:
General comments: I have used this Macpac Sanctuary 900 sleeping bag a few times now, either bivvying or in a tent. The hood on the sleeping bag is particularly good, with the adjustments and comfort of both the hood and the shoulder baffle being as good as anything I have seen. The zip baffle on the Sanctuary 900 also works well, it stops all drafts through the zip and it never snags when zipping, a first for any bag I have used. The bag feels tough and durable despite its light weight and its high performance. The Sanctuary 900 is quick to warm up and impressively resistant to moisture. The gore dryloft foot box does however prevent some moisture from escaping when wearing damp socks for example. Not a major issue but the down sometimes gets clumpy and cold feet can occur. The waterproof stuff sac is a good addition, although it offers little compression features. A separate compression sac within the supplied one works for me. All in all a superb sleeping bag from Macpac and well worth the retail price let alone the deals around in some places.

Pros: The hood is comfortable, quick and easy to adjust. Baffles stop all drafts and trap hot air quickly. The weight to warmth ratio.

Cons: No compression of stuff sac, slightly tight fit.

General comments: The Macpac Sanctuary 900 has proved a great bag at a good price, being 95% Goose down - once inside you do warm up in minutes. The soft internal lining feels so snug and the hood really tops it off. I find the draw cords in the hood a little difficult to ajust as they are string, perhaps im just used to the elastic cords of my summer bag. As for the zip, this is full length and more, allowing the bag to be opened 180 degrees, for use as a duvet or poking your feet out the end? The zip is also lined with an internal velcro flap. The sanctuary 900 comes with a mesh bag for storing, and a stuff sack that is inside a dry bag, (be sure to stuff the bag in the stuff sack then the dry bag!). This stuff sack and dry bag pack down to a good size, though a compression sack for expeditions would be handy. The dry bag is an excellant added extra, the thought that has gone into the making of this bag proves to me a great deal of effort has gone to making it comfortable and functional to those that sleep out in the freezing cold!

Pros: The hood makes the bag really cosy. Dry bag for a bonus. The price!

Cons: Hood draw cords prove a little fiddly. No compression sack.

Chris Snowden responded : I really do like the look of this bag however I'm somewhat unsure of it's comfort temps. How have you guys found it around the -10 mark? (2008-10-01)
