Black Diamond Alpine Bod Reviews
Reviewed by Sam Walmsley (England) on 2005-12-28:
General comments: A harness is obviously an essential piece of climbing equipment, and although the lack of padding and belay loop mean that, even considering the low price, this isn't an ideal first harness, it is undoubtedly very useful as a mountaineering harness.
The harness has been stripped of all but the very essentials, and some would argue that the loss of the belay loop was a step too far. In practice, it is rarely a problem, as this is a harness ideally suited to having a cow's tail, made of a short length of rope, permanently attached (a length of 7mm rope is much better than a sling for this job, as in even a very short small the forces generated by a non-dynamic sling can be lkarge enough to break equipment or your back).
The lack of padding is not a problem in cold environments,as you will generally be wearing enough clothes to keep yourself comfortable.
The leg loops clip using buckles, great when wearing crampos, as you don't have to slide the loop over your foot.
Overall a great harness for what it's designed for, you'll be grateful for the low weight when carrying it off the hill, and cheap too!
NB Be careful about clipping this harness together with a screwgate, it is likely to 3 way load and break
Pros: Light, no frills, cheap
Cons: Lack of belay loop, depending on your point of view
