Garmin GPS 12 Reviews
Reviewed by Jonathan Richards (Stirling) on 2006-02-24:
General comments: I've been using one of these for around 10 years now, and I think it is an excellent piece of kit. Although it was one of the earliest GPSs to come to market, I do not think that it has been bettered for simplicity and reliability in tough conditions yet (10 years on, they're still making them!). The display is big enough to see clearly even in rain/ snow. There are 5 basic screens (not counting the default), four of which are very useful. You can scroll forward or back to reach the screen you want. The multi-switch on the front takes only a little practice before the gloved hand can use it in tricky alpine weather when playing for all the marbles. There are no gimmicks or battery-draining add-ons to this machine. It is fully waterproof, and will survive in up to 10 metres of water (if you can find it - mine has gone overboard from my kayak and survived). I have used mine abroad and at home, and it can cope with French, Swiss and Italian maps. I have crossed the North sea in a yacht with it. There has been one significant improvement since I bought mine, namely that it now runs on 2 AA batteries in stead of four for the same 24 hour functional life.
Pros: Robust. Simple. Reliable. Easy to use in difficult conditions.
Cons: Relatively bulky compared to the e-trex series, but still worth its weight in gold.
