General comments: The sales pitch for the Alpine Pro Pant is impressive and all the boxes are ticked, Gortex, light weight, durable, However don't be tricked by the word 'alpine' these pants are no winter over trousers. I expect to get what I pay for, and £120 is a reasonable amount of money. I considered a couple of different manufactures before going for Berghaus but if they are good enough for Alan Hinkes and Chris Bonington then they are good enough for me. To my complete horror, my first outing with my new pants require me to visit an outdoor shop to buy repair tape for them. Yes Paclite is light weight and the Alpine Pro has the added strength and durability with the Cordura face but don't take kindly to any sort of contact with rock. Surely if they are designed for light weight Alpine use, they should be strong enough to take a bit of abrasion when scrambling. It would appear not. You've been warned!!
Pros: Its not all bad new. As a light weight summer over trouser they are great. They compress down very small in their own stuff sack and can live in the bottom of your bag. Once on they offer a range of nice features. Full length zips allow you to vent the trouser, articulated knees, reinforced kick straps, draw card adjustable waist, zip fly and removable braces
Cons: Used as a winter trouser they don't offer the same levels of wind resistance or durability as Gortex XCR and at £120 they're not cheap

General comments: I bought Berghaus Paclite Alpine Pro Pants about four years ago and have used them climbing in Russia, hiking in Greenland and throughout the uk. These pants are extremely light weight and compact down to a small size in its provided stuff sac and weigh in at approximately 500 grams. As such they are ideal for stuffing inside your bag without taking up much room. Performance wise they are made from GORE-TEX Paclite fabric with a lightweight Cordura face and I have never had any problems with their performance from keeping out the rain and snow. The trousers consist of a fully opening side separating leg zips ensuring they are easy to put on in a hurry over your boots and have a storm flap allowing ventilation and when combined with the breathability of the GORE-TEX Paclite fabric ensures that these trousers are extremely comfortable to wear. However there are clear cut disadvantages to these trousers too at 120 pound they are not the cheapest and my biggest gripe would be their performance in alpine conditions on rock. Having previously used them mostly for hiking in Greenland and the UK and not had any problems I took them to Russia climbing and on the first day on the mountain they ripped on contact with rock. I fixed that rip with tape however again on that trip they ripped again on another spot on contact with rock. This is a really disappointing feature and seems to be another complaint having read another review of these trousers. For the price and claiming to be alpine trousers I would certainly question their performance in alpine conditions. However as a general lightweight compact water proof trouser for hiking they are ideal.
Pros: Lightweight, compact, will keep you dry
Cons: rip very easily on rocks

General comments: The Alpine Pro are a Gore-Tex XCR waterproof/breathable shell pant made by Berghaus. They are intended as a general purpose shell, suitable for skiing, climbing and backpacking.
The pants are equipped with a hip length zippers on the outside of the legs, a zippered fly (Hallelujah!).
The leg zips run from the hem up to waist level. The fly is covered by a nylon flap, which camouflages it effectively.
Fit is excellent, trim without being confining. The thought put into the design and cut become readily apparent in use. There is enough room for layering without a resulting bulky fit.
I have used the Alpin trousers for a wide variety of year round backpacking and climbing trips, as well as numerous day hikes.
The pants have been subjected to some very hard use. I have pushed the Alpine pants through winter bushwhacks, deep snow and rubbed and banged against ice and rocks, not to mention innumerable crash landings when my skiing speed exceeds my skiing ability The latter seems to happen with alarming frequency. The pants show absolutely no signs of wear unlike the previouos reviewer (take them back as faulty). Bizzarley one of the best features over other waterproof trousers that I own is the crotch zip. As soon as I've 'closed and secured all hatches', nature invariably calls. Having a well placed zipper permits one to deal with this with no more than a slight inconvenience, rather than a full blown emergency requiring three hands and excavation equipment! In a word, berghaus got it right once again.
Pros: 1. Nice balance between light weight and durability.
2. Extremely functional and well designed.
3. That wonderful crotch zipper.
Cons: 1. Expensive, but this is a top shelf product and it shows.
2. Wheres all the pockets ???
