Berghaus Storm Overtrousers Reviews
Reviewed by geoff horky (cumbria) on 2006-02-18:
General comments: These overtrousers look and feel good. They bear the Berghaus logo.
Pros: They look good and are comfortable to wear, even for long periods. They have zips at the ankle and have press stud fasteners to reduce the ankle 'cuff' when fitted. They are shaped to fit. They are moderately waterproof and have a draw string at the waist to help hold them up.
Cons: They are NOT totally waterproof! I bought mine after a lot of research and was a little disappointed at their peformance. But I don't care! they look and feel good and make me look good!

General comments: I bought these Berghaus storm trousers to replace my cheap peter storm ones which were great while they lasted but had a few to many run ins with a fishing hook.
From the outset I could tell the difference in quality, the berghaus trousers are made from a tough 3 layer Gore-tex which is fully windproof and waterproof and also pretty breathable.
They offer a decent fit with an elasticated waste, that has so far yet to show any signs of wear or loosening which is great as the last think you want is them to start getting baggy.
Like most waterproof overtrousers they have a knee length zip to allow you to put them on and take them off over your boots or shoes. The zip is high quality which always gives that air of confidence that they will go the distance and you wont find your self with half a zip on your hand and the rest stuck halfway up the zipper.
They could do with a bit of extra material on the knees and around the bottom area just to prevent any wear when sitting down or crawling over rocks and obsticals, but as of yet mine are showing no signs of wear.
They aren’t the cheapest waterproof trousers on the market but you definitely get what you pay for and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending these to everyone.
Pros: Offer great water and wind resistance
light
big zips
Cons: no reinforcements on knees or bottom.

General comments: In general waterproof trousere are not meant to look good on FACT. This is until you try a pair of these on. They have an elasticated waist, i personnaly think they are slightly larger made than other trousers i have tried as I managed to drop down a size. They are made from 3 layer goretex which means that they are waterproof but as alwasy after 6 months or so I will reproof them. The trouser has a near enough full length side zip to aide putting them on withouy taking off your boots which I find invaluable. At the bottom there is a stud fastening but also the trouser tapers in slightly so that they become a snug fit against your boot and you dont get any excess flapping around. The knee design is erganomicaly designed so that it aids body movement. I would agree with a previous post about reinforced panels at stress points but doing some reasearcg befor buying it seems that it is only th goretex xcr pants that have that. My only complaint to date is that waterproof trosers should be made in slightly longer legs so that they can be worn without boots or gaiters Price is £90
Pros: Fit, look
Cons: could be longer in length

General comments: I bought these overtrousers as a general purpose 'workhorse' piece of kit, intending to use them for high-level and -intensity walking, scrambling and more adventurous winter trips. They were chosen for their functional build, clean lines and tough construction.
So far they have been used for the first two aims and have coped well with sustained heavy rain and wind. The articulated knee aided scrambling, preventing the trousers from riding up over the top of my boots. The draw cord waist band was also helpful and kept the trousers firmly in place.
On descent, the thigh-length zips on the side of the trousers were useful for venting, and a double stormflap with three poppers provided security against water ingress. The long zips, although not full length, will aid when putting the trousers over crampons or over boots when the weather turns nasty.
Lack of ankle reinforcement might be a problem when wearing crampons, although good technique is the best way to avoid puncturing the trousers, but the good cut does reduce excess material billowing out.
The three layer Gore-tex Performance Shell gave a sense of confidence in the durability of the trousers. There was also no clamminess, wearing shorts underneath the trousers in summer, and they provided sufficent insulation to be comfortable, although with trousers they were too hot.
Overall, I would definitely recommend these overtrousers to those looking for a tough general purpose overtrouser. Despite a couple of niggles, the trousers were highly effective and performed as expected. They are slightly expensive for what will normally be a peice of kit that is used fairly infrequently, but you can rely upon them when you put them on.
Pros: Good cut (especially the articulated knees)
Simple adjustable draw cord at wiast
Good durability
Not too heavy
Look neat and stylish in black
Cons: There were two points of weakness with the trousers, one avoidable, the other not. Firstly, the draw cord broke on the second day of wear. Although the trousers were useable, without the cord, there was the possibilty that they could slip down. They were were probably a rogue pair.
Secondly, after very heavy rain and high winds, the zips did start to leak a little. This was partly because of wind blowing rain directly into the storm flap opening from behind, but also because of the small overlap of the flaps. The three popper studs are mainly effective in securing the zips, but some water ingress is probably likely in certain bad conditions.

General comments: Over the years I've learned that buying cheaper waterproof trousers is a false economy. While I've been happy to spend money on expensive jackets, on the grounds they are protecting my vital organs, I have skimped a bit on trousers and as a result gone through many pairs of thin,not-very-waterproof, trousers. So at the start of the year I spent a bit extra on Berghaus Storms and have been delighted with how they handle conditions that have trashed so many other, lesser, trousers. They have been scraped against rock, tree branches, wire and still look brand new (brand new with muddy patches). They are not cheap and they are not light, but the extra weight is due to the tougher gore-tex used in their construction - extra weight is the price paid for extra durability. They are not perfect as the long zips, which allow such easy access, also allow water to seep in. The small storm flaps that cover the zips help, but would perhaps help a little more if held in place by velcro rather than three buttons. The zips are generally well designed, allowing effective ventilation of the legs on days when it is showery and warm. The fit is good, being tight around the lower leg, so it doesn't flap around, and roomier around the knee, so that when you are high stepping through some water saturated peaty mess you are not restricted - the cut on the lower leg still allows me to keep my gaiters on underneath when the trousers are zipped up, so it's not too tight. They may not be perfect, but I would buy them again.
Pros: Good fit; tough; effective ventilation
Cons: Heavy; not watertight - in driving rain;
