Black Diamond Flick Lock Expedition Pole Reviews
Reviewed by Graham Hewitt (Forres) on 2006-01-10:
General comments: Walking poles used to be for old crocks, but now more people are realising that since knees and hips don't last forever then a good pair of poles can delay that day when you're forced to join the old crocks brigade.
You wouldn't think there was much to choose between different poles, but Black Diamond have scored with their "flick lock" system which makes them easy to adjust even with mitts on or in snow. The usual method of turning one section against another to loosen tends to jam or spin without freeing. A soft feel grip and contoured wrist straps make them comfortable to hold and they come in two sizes for taller and shorter users.
They weigh about a pound and a quarter, which might not suit the ultra-lite, but the advantages are many: apart from saving on joint wear, they make uphill walking easier, especially with a heavy pack on; downhill they can offer security; crossing water is safer and you can use them for skiing.
Because they come in 3 sections they pack down to a neat size for stowing on your daypack.
Pros: Easy to adjust for different conditions: long for downhill and shorter for uphill.
Cons: A bit dearer than basic poles.
