Trekmates Torridon Gaiter Reviews
Reviewed by Graham Hewitt (Forres) on 2006-01-09:
General comments: This is a no-nonsense pair of gaiters in breathable fabric that performs well. In days of yore when all walkers wore tweed breeches and long woollen socks, gaiters were useful but not essential. If your socks got dirty or wet during a backpack you changed them. Nowadays when designer trousers are de rigueur gaiters are essential. Trousers flap about picking up dirt and wet like a sponge, quickly becoming a sodden, peat-stained mess; so unless you're thinking of confining your walks to deserts then for Scotland pack a pair of gaiters.
The TrekMates Torridon will work as well as any, except for Yeti's which are in a different league, and are suitable for any boots and all seasons. They are strongly made with sturdy press studs, zips and Velcro closures. A stirrup strap and front lace hook keep them on the boot. A drawcord can be tightened to keep them on your leg.
Adjust the underfoot strap to fit your boots, trim the excess and seal the end with a flame to prevent fraying. Then, when walking fit them to your boots from the back with the strap going underneath the heel. The strap can be replaced when it wears out. The Torridons will keep you dry and clean in most weathers. Give them a wash when you get home and they're ready for the next trip.
Pros: Price and performance.
Cons: None.
