Black Diamond Focus AL

   Black Diamond Focus AL Reviews

Reviewed by Pete Skene (Edinburgh) on 2006-02-04:
General comments: This is my second harness and I've used it for winter climbing, canyoning, trad and sport and its performed perfectly in all of them. It's on the upper end of the BD range, with more ergonomic padding and I did notice it was more comfortable than the Momentum when I was trying them on - which has been a definite plus for hour long hanging belays. The Black Diamond Focus AL has 4 gear loops which work fine. and it has a rear belay loop, which I tend to just use as another gear loop for spare screwgates and stuff I don't need often. It has adjustable leg loops so it can be used for summer sport cragging to freezing winter climbing.

Pros: 4 well positioned gear loops (better than the plasticy ones on the Momentum). They have melted the webbing on the ends of the straps so its nice and easy to thread the buckles even with mitts!!

Cons: Doesn't have ice clipper attachment points but I've been fine without it. No adjustable rise (unlike Metolius harnesses) so make sure it fits before you buy it. You need to remember to rethread the buckle (unlike Petzl ones).

General comments: I bought this Black Diamond harness as my first, and have no complaints. The fit is good, and the high levels of padding in both waist and legs loops provide excellent comfort (ideal for cushioning falls!). The shape of the waist (Black Diamond's newly introduced 'bullhorn' shape) provides good lower back support. It is fully adjustable at both legs and waist, so can be worn over as much or as little clothing as needed i.e. it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, in all weather conditions. The Focus AL has four large gear loops, and a haul loop/spare belay loop at the back, which I usually use for a chalk bag. There is also a Velcro elasticated belt which holds the harness up, without the need to thread the buckle, which is extremely useful. Comparably, it is much more comfortable than the Momentum, with gear loops which are far more ergonomic; I used my friend's Momentum until I bought the Focus, and the step up in comfort is marked.

Pros: This harness is extremely well padded without compromising on weight, has plenty of well positioned gear loops, and is fully adjustable.

Cons: Nothing springs to mind, but don't forget to thread the buckle when on the elastic belt (potentially disastrous!).

General comments: This is my third black diamond harness as I find that the quality for the money cant be beaten. I have replaced mine every second year since I have been climbing purely as good practice rather than because the black diamonds have shown any sign of wear. As I have a small waist 30" I find the small a very good fit as it does 29-32 inches. Plus the extra you can take in on the legs is really beneficial. Gear loops are handy, but the best feature of this harness is how comfortable it is. You can really wear this all day due to the padding and there is zero chaffing of the bits you dont wont chaffed.

Pros: Top class, very adjustable

Cons: None. best harness I have owned
