The new Spider from Grivel can provide increased traction on snow and ice. Whilst the attachments cannot be used on steeper slopes, the Spiders are a great innovation from Grivel (in terms of size, weight and cost) and perfect for situations where standard crampons would be overkill. The spiders can easily be fitted to any shoe or boot. Please use common sense with this product - when you get airlifted off tower ridge please don't say that buachaille.com claimed the Spiders would be suitable for full-on alpine routes!

General comments: a much better idea than instep crampons. I got caught out by a change in weather, so decide to try some of these and... not bad at all! Hardly the same as full crampons, but if you stamp them ina little they bite pretty well on slippery stuff. Plus the fact that they're placed at the instep means you can grip on rock using the rubber of the toe section!
Pros: Bargain (£12). Work better than instep jobs and you can use them on approach shoes, 3season boots or anything else you want.
Cons: Not as good as a full crampon, but what were you expecting? That said, in some applications, they actually might be better...

General comments: I purchaced these from the lakes at christmas 2005. They sat unused until march 2006 when i used them on the Snowdon Horseshoe. I found them very easy to attach and adjust to my boots. When on the provided excelent controllable grip on the ice when ascending and decending. They felt very positive and surefooted. After the walk when i took them off bothe unfortunately had snapped. One had snapped at the strap mounting point and was just about still attatched and the other had a spike missing whch had been ripped out and the plastic around it torn. Overall i am very happy with the performance they provided but the durability is very questionable. I had them on for about 2 hours total on ice and snow only.
Pros: Very comfy, Provide positive predictable traction. Fold up to store safely in bag provided. Easy to fit to probably any boot / shoe
Cons: Snapped on first outing.

General comments: Amazingly effective kit considering modest price and extremely light weight. They live in my rucksac during winter months for instant accessibilty when the surface turns icy. Do not use on steep or mixed (ie rock and ice) ground as that will probably wreck them ie common sense required.
There are a few pairs in use by council workers in Aberdeen where they are particularly useful on pavements that have not been cleared quickly enough and verglass over.
Pros: Can fit any footwear. A bit advantage over "real" crampons.

General comments: I have had mine over 5 winters and have no complaints.
I just couldn't have left the house without them
Cons: No instructions on to put on.
Until this year I was fitting them incorrectly

Alan McCulloch responded : I am reasonably happy with the Spider. Obviously not a full on crampon, but a 'must have' in your bag just in case when winter walking. My pair have direction arrows for fitting purpose but still not sure how to best use the straps. (2010-12-22)

General comments: Have just returned from weekend in the Lakes spiders had their first outing and were very successful.
Great for sure footed descent over sloping snow covered grass, rime covered rock and iced up streams.
Pros: Sure footed good performers
Cons: not necessarily apparent as to which way round to fit first time you use them on the hill. Having said that within 5 minutes was happily coming downhill very sure footedly.

General comments: Bought these just before the cold weather set in, they are great for walking around icy and snowy pavements with confidence! Although initially sceptical about the price and durability I have been very impressed! Recommend to all for getting about safely in the ice and snow.
Pros: Price, pack into own carry sack, fit any kind of boot, seem so far quite durable!
Cons: Lack of detailed instructions, no spare tips.
