General comments: bough one of these to repalce my Marmot powershield softshel (just looked too posy!) Good jacket, good fit although a little tight round the backside. you feel invincible in it!!!!!!
Pros: overall fit, material, hood is cool idea
Cons: jacket tends to ride above my but as its quite shaped at the bottom. arm pocket is stitched in ..comon guys this is the age of welding!!!, the zips could have been a little more water resistant (check out the arcteryx ones!!!)

General comments: It took me awhile to decide on which softshell to get, i read most of the reviews, spend ages in the outdoor shops of S.wales until finally deciding on the G2. the jacket basically has everything i want. the fabric is quite a weighty fabric with my size large coming in at 688grms. i like this fact as it makes the jacket feel hardwearing. I have tried on lighter weight softshell's such as the vadue Quad and the mountain Hardwear syncro but have not really taken to their lightness. the jacket has a great 'active' cut which means that it is somewhat 'fitted' but not to clingy. the fabric is highly water resistant but not waterproof as are the zips. there are 2 well placed chest pockets and one small pocket on the arm for your GPS! (must be a small one). The jacket has the added feature of a gore paclite hood to fend off snow showers and light rain.
the fabric also has a bruched fleece inner which adds to the warmth rating, i have used this jacket in winter conditions with just a powerstretch fleece top underneath. it has just won 2nd place in the Trail 'britain's toughest' softshell test (march 06) so there must be something in it.
Pros: well made, fit, nice and warm, almost waterproof fabric
Cons: small arm pocket, zips could be made more wateresistant

General comments: Bought this jacket a few weeks ago ready for the winter season in Scotland. Chose it as it came highly recommended by an outdoor mag I was reading recently.
I like Mountain Equipment stuff as I've always had good quality products from them. The garment is wind and water resistant so light downpours mean that there is no need to put the bulky shell jacket on. But you must always take it with you as in really heavy downpours it will get saturated. I liked how well you can vent the jacket with pit zips and mesh lined chest pockets so that if you get a bit warm there is no need to stop and take the jacket off. There is an emergency style hood that rolls away into the coller for light downpours but I must admit I forget about it most of the time and never use it. Some of the smaller features that make it a nice jacket are the fleece lined coller, elastic hem drawcord and velcro cuffs. There is also a nice little zip pocket on the sleave that I believe you can keep your GPS in.
Pros: Good wind and water resistance in anything but really heavy rain. Fleece lined collar. Good venting pockets.
Cons: The hood does seem a little pointless to me but some people will probably find it really useful.

General comments: Superb softshell which is almost waterproof. Great fit and you can wear it anywhere..
Pros: Having spent ages deciding what I wanted from a shftshell and what I was going to do with it the mountain equipment G2 came out on top. The fabric, gore windstopper , is a very hard wearing material which can take scrapes and snags in its stride. I love the fit of the jacket as it is close enough to keep the heat in and the weather out but not too tight like some others. I love the two-tone colours which is an improvement over black which so many jackets are. There is a gore-tex paclite hood rolled away in the collar which fits very well and has volume adjusters for optimum fit. The chest pockets can swallow a map no problem and there is an inside pocket for valuables. Pit zips are and added bonus to help vent if you are getting overheated.
Cons: The fabric, although very tough is not waterproof, I found out this the hard way, the paclite hood kept my head dry though. The jacket is very heavy compared to some but I like this as it feels like it can handle anything. The plastic locks on the hip cord do not grab the cord very well

General comments: This jacket is definitely towards the weatherproof end of the softshell spectrum, taped seams and the packlite hood meaning that the weather can get just that little bit more unpleasant before you're dipping into your pack for the hardshell. That said, worn over an appropriate wicking layer it is extremely comfortable even with a lot of physical activity. The pit zips are handy if it gets a little steamy inside and seem to be sufficiently tucked away that they don't let too much of the weather in. The cut isn't perfect, under exercise the back can ride up above your bum so make sure you have your trousers up high and also the neck feels a little tight for my taste (though this does help to keep the warm air in).
The hood is minimal, cut well back on the face to reduce its volume. theis means that walking into the rain you might find things a little uncomfortable but by tugging the volume and face adjusters you can get an extremely snug and weatherproof fit.
The pockets are capacious and the zips a good size however they could be located slightly higher on the chest for easier access under rucksack straps.
Pros: A great jacket for use in moderate to poor conditions, cut stylishly enough to be worn day to day but definitely still a technical garment
Cons: The cut at the lower back is a little annoying, perhaps not as versatile as more breathable jackets.

General comments: I think that there might be a little confusion with some of the earlier reviews as they seems to describe the G2 Alpine jacket and not the plain common or garden G2 jacket.
The Alpine jacket costs around £30 more than the standard G2 jacket a comes with the GPS pocket and paclite hood. The G2 jacket does not have the hood, GPS pocket or chest pockets. What it does have is two handwarmer pockets and internal pockets including a useful map pocket. The velcro cuffs have nice big rubber tabs on so you can easily adjust them, even with gloves on. A typical ME touch is the microfleece tab over the top of the zip so that it doesn't rub your neck raw.
The ME fit is typically great, I am quite heavily built but as usual for ME kit, this fits me without looking too tight.
If anybody is looking for a warm soft shell, this is not the jacket for them. It only has a thin layer of insulation. Some people will find that they need a 100 weight fleece or thermal base layer to use this in cold weather. However, if you want a high activity jacket or a soft shell that can actually be used during the British "summer", this is perfect for you.
Pros: The usual high ME build standard, the map pocket and the fact that it is not too insulated so you can layer easily.
Cons: Some might find the thin insulation is insufficient.
