The Ogre is a high performance jacket suitable for any weather conditions. It is effectively a new version of the Lhotse and similarly utilises GTX XCR for maximum strength and durability. As with all mountain equipment jackets, particular attention is given to the cut so as not to hamper freedom of movement. The hood can be folded away when not needed and there are lots of drawcords to adjust the fit around the neck area. Also, when wearing a helmet, the hood still turns with your head. There are two huge front pockets while remain accessible during technical climbing (no gear in the way) and one taped map-sized pocket. The waist can also be adjusted depending on how fat, slim, cold or hot you feel.

General comments: I got a chance to test the Ogre jacket up at Plas y Brenin earlier this year. The Ogre is a technical jacket made from Gore-Tex XCR, highly breathable and extremely hard wearing. Mountain equipment has serious sizing issues with their jackets and I had to move down a size form my normal medium, even the small was a bit on the big side. In use the jacket is brilliantly comfortable. The designers at ME have a real skill when it comes to putting these jackets together. Even waving your arms around like a mad man the jacket doesn't ride up at and all this without huge excesses of fabric under the arms. Another area ME have sewn up is their hoods, when adjusted the hood fitted perfectly with or without a helmet and moved perfectly with my head. In the driving rain I stayed perfectly dry with no condensation even on a strenuous scramble. The small loops for gloves on the arm are an interesting idea but in practice they do tend to get caught in vegetation and rocks - I understand these are being removed next year, but you can always cut them off if you don't like them!

Pros: Great hood, good cut. Goretex backed pockets means it's completely waterproof.

Cons: Sizing very generous, not good if you're a small person.

General comments: Recently purchased after reading reviews about this jacket. I have found to to be an excellent performing piece of kit that offers excellent freedom of movement when on. It is extremely breathable, can be worn all year round and fits nicely into the bottom of your pack. The front zip is quite high fastening which I found good for buffeting winds and snow. It is fairly expensive to buy but worth every penny!

Pros: Breathability and movement

Cons: hood slightly ackward to adjust when up though this is just a personal comment

General comments: After years of compromising on the quality of my outdoor gear for reasons of cost, I finally found myself in a position to buy a top end waterproof. After much research I settled on the Ogre which I chose over Berghaus' Accelerator and Sullivan. I have worn the jacket three times, a beautiful cold crisp day on High street, an ascent of Blencathra in torrential rain and a day out on Beinn Eighe on a typical mixed British mountain weather day. This Mountain Equipment jacket looks great and is very comfortable, although the sleeves are far too long on the medium size model I bought. As other reviewers have pointed out the hood is great and I could even adjust it wearing winter gloves, the position, size and number of pockets has been well thought out and the jacket packs down very small. Where I find myself disagreeing with other reviewers is in the performance of the Ogre - the pockets leak, even when they have been fully zipped all day and condensation forms inside the jacket especially in the sleeves. This was evident on all three trips, a big disapointment. I am coming to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a breathable waterproof.

Pros: Cut, comfort, hood, size and position of pockets.

Cons: Performance - the Orge is not very breathable.

General comments: Bought this jacket in June 2006 as a replacement to a brilliant (but very worn out due to age) Sprayway Torridon. The fit of the jacket is excellent. Some reviewers have complained about this, length of the sleaves, over generous sizing etc. but I found no such problems. Have worn it in most Scottish weather conditions and during a four day trek in Iceland carrying a full pack without any concern. It's waterproof, and even without pit zips, very breathable. Adjuster tabs on the cuffs are easy to use with gloves on, as are the tags on the zips. People seem to rave about ME hoods. They are hoods and keep your head dry whilst still letting you see out the front! Two main pockets are well placed to avoid rucksack straps and harnesses. Map pocket could be a bit bigger, it's a tight fit if your map is in a case.

Pros: Good fit, very waterproof and breathable. Easy to adjust fit even with winter gloves on.

Cons: Map pocket could be bigger.

General comments: A quality product from Mountain Equipment. I do lots of climbing in it and the capacious chest pockets are well placed to be clear of a harness, and big enough to stuff gear into quickly if you get scared while seconding! Large map pocket too. The hood is perhaps the best feature as it is easily adjusted and stays very well placed as you look around, with enough room for a helmet. The cut is good; it doesn't ride up at all. The face fabric is durable enough to have coped with a year's climbing and 3 months camping in an arctic Spring with no issues, although it has bubbled away from the Gore-tex XCR lining a little in one or two places. I have been pleased with the waterproofness of this jacket.

Pros: A durable, high-performance jacket with a good hood and pockets. Well-thought out.

Cons: The drawcords in the hood tend to loosen easily if walking into a strong wind, slight bubbling away of the face fabric - this is a trivial point.

General comments: I purchased this jacket for year round hiking in the lake district and cannot find any fault with it. The first main benefit i noticed with this jacket is the fit. It seemed at first that the cut was a bit more generous than other Goretex jackets (all my previous jackets have been size Large – this was also Large) but when used outdoors I now suspect this is intentional design. There’s a bit more room in the arms, which is ideal when worn over a fleece or other insulation layer and when worn with a rucksack you begin to appreciate the reasoning behind the cut. It has a drop tail, waterproof pockets etc which make this very waterproof (the most waterproof jacket I’ve owned). The hood is the best aspect of the jacket, the wired peak giving excellent protection from the elements whilst not inhibiting vision. Its packs down quite small and at 500g is an acceptable backpacking weight. The Goretex Pro Shell fabric is very breathable. Mountain Equipment certainly seem to know what the UK hillwalker needs, its who I always look to for my outdoor clothing at the moment.

Pros: The hood, very waterproof, excellent build quality. Perfect for year round UK use.

Cons: None that I can think of.
