The Mountain Technology Vertige Alpinist axe goes some way in bridging the gap between traditional walking axes and technical axes. Unlike the Mountain Technology Alpine which has a steel shaft, the Vertige Alpinist's shaft is made from aluminium. The pick is manufactured from Nickel Chrome. The axe weighs 0.6kg in total and has a length of 50 centimetres. | Site | Price | Postage | Total |

General comments: If you want a bomproof T-rated tool for scottish mixed routes this could be the one. Having bent a cheaper (inferior) axe i was looking for the most durable cost effective tools i could set my hands on. When you weigh up the cost of replacement picks, around ?26, combined with the availability of alpine picks, you've got quite an economical package that can not only be used for harder mixed routes, but classical mountaineering routes and even alpine climbing. Whilst some may shy away from such firepower in an alpine setting, a comparison with other tools reveals the Alpinist to be a lightweight in the T-rated category.
Pros: Bombproof construction, cheap replacement picks, lightweight
Cons: Straight shafts don't give great clearance over ice bulges, the tools centre of balance is quite close to the head, meaning prolonged swinging isn't as efficient compared to the DMM Fly in my own experience. The slightly bent shaft version of the Vertige seems better in this respect.

General comments: I used the Vertige Alpinist axe on the Mont Blanc Massif during march 05. It is a fantastic piece of kit - mine came with a reversed glacier pick and a classical pick, so I can use it for cascade ice WI 5 and colouirs as well as typical glacial terrain.
The pick is also very easy to change. The adze can be swapped for a hammer. All in all, a very sophisticated, interchangable ice axe from Mountain Technology.
Pros: Easy adjustment from classical to technical pick.
