Marmot Helium Reviews

General comments: If you are looking for a down bag, that takes in mind weight, size and durability. This is it! I have had my Helium for about 3 seasons now, and it is the best bag I have ever owned for cold weather when moisture is not going to be an issue. I have lost some of the loft and the light weight goose down they use tends to work its way throught the bag every now and again. It is as warm today as when I first got it though. You pay for what you get , this bag is for the guy or girl that takes weight into consideration for everything they do. On my scale the bag in a stuff sack comes in at 2 lb 1oz (0.95 kg) which is a very, very respectable weight. My 6' 1" frame fits into the Long just fine with a tonne of room in the shoulders for the person who likes to roll around alot. (ME). the foot box is quite large as well and I have not developed any cold spots as of yet
Pros: light, warm, compressable into the size of a loaf of bread
Cons: durability of the insulation although good it is an expensive bag that you probably will get 5 good seasons out of before the temp rating is comprimised.....expensive bag.

Christina responded : Hi there, what is the min temperature that you used the bag in? I'm looking for a good bag that lets me be comfy at -20 C. What' you reckon?
Cheers

Buachaille.com responded : Hi Christina, the official rating for the Marmot Helium sleeping bag is -9C although you could probably push it a big lower in reality (maybe not to -20 though). If you like the Marmot brand, we would recommend the Marmot Lithium - the offical rating for this bag is -18C which should be more than adequate for you. (2009-01-15)

General comments: High spec very low weight quality bag
I have had this bag for three years and only use it between October and March as it is too HOT outside these months.
The warmth and weight ratio was a huge deciding factor as were the reviews I on the internet and has more than lived up to these. Due to my to being virtically challenged,(5'6") I chose a women's size bag with a short zip.
Pros: The warmth/weight ratio is amazing. This 900 fill down bag weighs in at only 800g but has a comfort rating down to -9c although I have yet to test this fully. The materials and it's construction is top notch using the same material for it's outer shell as parachutes and handgliders use i.e. very durable and strong. The hood is also very comfortable and doesn't use velcro but is very effective. The zip baffle is also a decent size keeping out any cold draughts.
Cons: It's a down bag so don't get it wet. It only has a half length zipper although for me this is not an issue. Expensive although if looked after it will be worth it many times over. When it's not cold enough outside you can get condensation on the top of the bag. As usual some down dose escape, but thats par for the course with down bags.
