General comments: A very good all round soft shell jacket, although initially a little dubious of the price, the wearing on a few outings has proved the quality of this garment. Being an excellent fit for those of us who are taller than average, with the length of the back and arms being generous, comfortable and not a problem as with many others.
Previously being an advocate of the more traditional fleece and outer shell jacket, the Mera Peak is now consigned to the rucksack in all but the most extreme wet weather. With the fleece compressed into a stuff sack for emergencies. Given the excellent wind proofing and thermal capability the versatility of wearing this garment over base thermals is a definite plus for freedom of movement when scrambling.
Pros: A) Being 6’1’’ tall, the length of the back to the garment is very well proportioned to prevent ‘riding up’ when wearing a rucksack. Similarly the length of the arms is generous as well.
B) Excellent general windproof capabilities, especially when used with gloves and a fleece head over.
C) The full length front zip, two side pockets and one chest pocket (with mesh inserts) combine to provide good ventilation capabilities during an arduous ascent.
Cons: A) The sleeves are elasticised, which provide a fair fit, but can admit draughts in strong winds. Would have been better with adjustable Velcro, thereby also allowing ventilation when warm.
B) The absence of a hood is noticeable in light driving rain.
C) The stretch panels on the sleeves have a tendency to soak up rainwater in a strong shower.
D) The price is a little high compared to other garment available.
