Alpkit's 4 season down sleeping bag. Containing almost a kilo of decent quality goose down, this sleeping bag can be used down to temperatures of -20 degrees. Like the Alpine Dream 500 and 700, this bag's dimensions are 215cm x 85cm but it's 200 grams heavier (1.6kg). You definitely get a lot of down for the price!

General comments: When you open your parcel from Alpkit you get presented with 3 items : The Sleeping Bag itself, a storage sack (complete with a snappy Alpkit logo) and a stuff sack. The bag itself is very, very warm. There are few imaginable conditions in the UK (and, dare I say it, even in the Alps) in which you would need such a warm bag, but plenty where you would enjoy the comfort. The close fitting cut and volume of down make this bag very cosy, without being restrictive, and the hood at the top of the bag fits very comfortably. Perhaps the only drawback in the fitting is the draw string to close the hood once you're inside the bag, as it's very difficult to maneuver.
What pleased me particularly with this bag was Alpkit's attention to detail. By supplying not only a stuff sack by also a storage stack you get left with a feeling that they've gone an extra mile. A simple thing, no doubt, but one that will add longevity to your bag, and is included in the price.
The major drawback of the bag is of course the weight. At 1.6kg for the regular it is by no means heavy for its class - compare it, say, to the Mountain Equiptment Classic. However, unless you're planning a trip somewhere you will need the -20 comfort rating, it might be worth looking at the other Alpkit sacks.
Pros: Warm, great price and good customer service.
Cons: Heavy, but not unduly so.

Alpkid responded : The AD range used a Tactel nylon outer fabric that was 'relatively' heavy. For lightweight use the PipeDream would be a better choice. Last year this used a Pertex Quantum fabric, this year we are using a Toray fabric weighing 29gm/m2. Hopefully we will have a 800gr version sometime this year which should be comparable to the AD900. General comments: An update.. The AlpineDream range is no more, but don't worry it has been replaced by the SkyeHigh range. On the surface the spec seems lower.. 650 (EU) fill power goose down, however the construction of the SkyeHigh range is far superior. The SkyeHigh range is available in short, long and regular lengths and in a choice of colours. The range starts at £60 up to £115 for the 1000g model, even better value than our original AD series.
So what are the plans for the AlpineDream? We found a lot of people were taking them to the limit so our AlpineDream bags will be upgraded for users looking for even more performance. The AlpineDream series will be back next year as a full on mountain / expedition bag.Comment on this review...
