Icebreaker Womens Chakra Zip Reviews

General comments: Personally I have found this product, when worn in a layering system, i.e. Baselayer, softshell, waterproof, works very well, wicking sweat, with no smell once the day is over. It is a very warm marino wool product that is comfortable to wear on the hill, piste, or even at work.
Pros: Warm, odourless, zip neck for heat control.
Cons: Would need more than one for extended trips!

General comments: I have been a convert to all things merino since a friend brought me back a icebreaker 'sport' top from New Zealand some years ago. This top has been with me on many adventures due to the fact that it is very warm and does not seem to smell after repeated usage. I bought the Chakra zip whilst on holiday in france and it is no firmly entrenched in my layering system.
the merino wool used in the Chakra is the very light 200grm version. it is extreamlly soft and provides very good insulation for such a lightweight item. the fit is good being snug but not too clingy and the sddition of the zip make ventilation a 'breeze' (excuse the pun!). The fabric, being a lighter weight than the sport, does not have the same 'resists odours for months' property as the heavier versions, but still can be used for three to four days and still smell fine.
All in all a very fine piece of kit although if you want something a little more hardwearing go for the 'Bodyfit' line which weighs in at 260grms. I have the legging in this weight and they are fantastic. Merino has now been embraced by many manufacturors buy Icebreaker is not only the original but the best (and its made in New zealand when i last checked)
Pros: warm, featherweight, resists odours
Cons: price

General comments: I always seem to complain about the cold, so before a recent skiing trip my boyfriend brought me the Chakra zip. I have been a Helly Hanson thermal girl for along time, but I was told it was time for a change. As soon as I put on the Chakra zip it felt much better, with the soft fabric and an excellent fit to a women’s body. Ok, so it felt good, but would it work on the slopes? I was amazed at the difference it made. I felt warm most of the time, and the only day I didn’t wear it I was cold. This may have been coincidence, but from now on I am wearing the Chakra. While away it did seem odour resistant, however I washed it in the sink, and it was dry within an hour. This shows how quickly it transfers moisture away from the body. Even during intense periods of exercise, I didn’t feel itchy like I did with the Helly Hanson thermals. The other advantage was the zip, when I got to hot I could let come air in, I was unable to do this with the Helly Hanson. I understand this is twice the price of the HH thermals but it is so worth it, wash after wash it still looks new, and for thermal wear is actually quite trendy. I have worn it in lots of après ski bars!
Pros: It is a truely excellent thermal top - see above
Cons: None as yet - will keep on testing it .

General comments: I have worn micro fleece as a base layer for a number of years now.
I and was completely happy with it apart from the small issue of it getting a little wiffy after an extended period of wear.
I was given the advice by a freind who had spent 3 months on the south island of New Zealand walking and climbing in the back country to try out a new performance material.
Sceptiacally I did and have found it fantastic. I doubt I will go back now to man made fleece next to my skin.
Pros: Warm and very comfortable. Light and packable. The zip is really good for ventilation after exertion. No static build up, which was a pet hate of mine with fleece in dry, cold climates.
Looks great too.
Cons: I have to say that is not a cheap product to buy and is not appear to be that available yet. However quality has never been cheap and this fantastic item will become more and more popular as people ty it out.
