These tops define Icebreaker's baselayer/fleece range and you see them popping up all over the place - on the hill, on the slopes or even in the pub. The Icebreaker Tech Top uses BodyFit 260 which is one of their "heavier" materials in terms of warmth but is still ultra-light. The collar can be worn in 3 different styles and the sleeves also have thumb loops.

General comments: A heavyweight wool layer, this can genuinely be worn as either a base layer or an insulation layer. One of Icebreaker's most popular tops, the Tech Top has a dropped tail, Raglan sleeves, thumb loops and a zip collar which is long enough to roll down. The cut is relaxed lending itself to midlayer use, with a high collar and deep zip. I found the zip to be narrow round my throat; acceptable as a base layer but too tight with a garment underneath it. As a base layer it kept me warm until it had picked up too much sweat, at which point it was slow to dry. As a mid-layer it was warm but because I couldn't zip up the narrow neck, the collar formed flappy wings. After a couple of washes it lost the new-wool scratchiness and become super-soft. The Icebreaker Tech Top is a warm and extremely versatile top, if you have a skinny neck.
Pros: Versatility, deep zip, cut.
Cons: Narrow zip-neck, slow to dry.
