General comments: The ultimate in cold weather performance shirts with great breathability and pretty good waterproof abilities. In a downpour this is not the best item to be caught out in but for the odd shower you can get away with just having this. This is at its best on very cold and windy days when activity is kept to a minimum. Being worn next to skin it has excellent wicking properties but can be a bit itchy after a day or two so would recommend a helly hansen under it after this if you sweat a lot. The pit zips are great for rapid cooling but you may find you are constantly playing around with them to try and create a reasonable core temperature. There is a strap on the inside of the "belly" pocket that can be used to create a warm air pocket and also stops the shirt from rising too much when raising your arms above your head during climbing assists.
Even when really warm when wearing this you don't feel that clammy feeling that is associated with most other types of clothing due to the pile lining. All in all a great piece of cold weather kit that has stood the test of time and will last you a lifetime of hard wear.
Pros: Warm, breathable and and exteremely hard wearing.
Cons: Can be irritable to the skin after a few days hard use, but otherwise very difficult to fault.

General comments: Incredibly warm, windproof jacket that due to the use of zips remains temperature flexible.
The Buffalo Special Six is designed to work as a "end" to the layering fuss. Wear by itself without a baselayer or waterproof. The pile generates warmth, whilst the pertex keeps out the wind without sacrificing breathability.
Should it rain, the Buffalo functions almost like a wetsuit, with the pile preventing water from stripping the body of heat. When the downpour stops, simply wear the special six, and the water will evaporate out of the shirt.
Alternativly, I've found for prolonged use, the Special Six can be used as an insulation layer, kept in the pack until a stop, when the addition of nice fluffy pile is a great morale boost
Pros: Pile rather than fleece
Highly adaptive
Warm
Wind proof
Largely unnaffected by rain
Cons: Price
Weight

General comments: I've had my Buffalo Special 6 shirt for years. I first wore it climbing, and went for the black as I was living in a city and wanted to blend in at night! I've loved it ever since, and apart from a hole caused by falling off my bicycle, in the wrist area, it's still as good as the day I bought it. wore it recently on the Fells at sunset on a cloudless winter evening, and was snug as a bug in a rug. An old friend who never complains...
Pros: Does what it says on the packet. No base layers needed, easily vented even with pack on. Washes well, light & packs into a melon-sized stuffsack.
Cons: Did leak a little (coldspots) but I was in the rain for a good 6 or 7 hours! I prefer a base layer, although can restrict movement. Measure up carefully before you buy. I nought a little bigger to wear as a jacket in the city too. A bit awkward getting it on and off.
