Rated by Rab for anything from high-altitude and Polar environments to trekking, the nicely thought-out, near knee-height Rab Hispar Gaiter is a belt and braces job. The front closure combines a tough zip with a 6cm Velcro flap, with poppers top and bottom and a double-riveted plastic lace hook. I'm not a big fan of omnipresent velcro on gaiters; if it flaps open (rare, admittedly) it can become clogged with debris. The common combination, however, covers all bases. The rubberised instep strap - which is removable and easily replaced when worn out - is on the long side; once you've adjusted it for a particular boot you can trim off any excess that flaps annoyingly. The upper section of the Rab Hispar Gaiters is eVent lined; the lower, heavier duty boot section has bellowed a tad, probably because the gaiter is meant to fit over heavier-duty mountaineering boots than I used during testing. The Rab Hispar is a robust gaiter with plenty to commend it.
