Black Diamond Spot Headtorch XB Reviews
Reviewed by Simon (Trail Magazine) (UK) on 2009-02-27:
General comments: The Black Diamond Spot is amazing. While snowholing, having dangled at the end of my tether with flying snow, a knackered back and freezing cold for several hours, I took it off and, using the end of my ice axe, hammered it into the ice wall, thereby creating a kind of al fresco recessed lamp. It wasn't an exercise I imagined would work. I was just pissed off with the world at the time and it seemed like a suitable brash thing to do. There it stayed for siz hours on full beam, surrounded by battery-sapping ice, heroically lighting a decent chunk of the snowhole through dig and dinner. And today, its still on the same set of batteries. The Black Diamond Spot XB is the most powerful headtorch I've ever used, with a central LED strong enough to signal a ship, zero weight and a decent set of modes controlled by a button you don't need pliers to operate.

General comments: Excellent bright headtorch suitable for running and Night Nav map work etc. As earlier review states, excellent battery life.
My only concerns are on the durability of the plastic frame that mounts the headtorch to the headstrap. Mine has cracked in several places and is now hld together with numerous cable ties. If you going to give the headtorch a hardtime, ie banginb in to trees etc I think there are more durable designs, ie the Petzl.
You takes your choices, do you want the brightest of the compact designs?
Pros: Excellent bright light
Cons: Flimsy plastic frame
