The eTrex Vista is a slick looking silver-cased GPS from Garmin, generally accepted to be the leaders in handheld GPS technology. The device boasts accuracy to 10 feet and 24Mb of memory allowing you upload data from Map-Source software. General comments: As with all Garmin etrex range the Vista comes packaged in a sturdy shock resistant case which is waterproof down to 1 metre; good enough for when you drop it in a puddle or your pint when your showing it off to your mates down the pub. The Vista combines all the features of the cheaper etrex models and in additional to the usual waypoint and route planning features boasts a barometric altimeter, digital compass, and basic mapping. Even with all this the Vista is easy to navigate through the clever arrangement of buttons and joystick that allows one-handed operation. A comprehensive set of trip functions allows you to track or review your progress on your route, all of which can be viewed on a customisable screen so you can see exactly what you need. A great feature of the Vista is the self-calibration of the altimeter. By combining the information from the air pressure sensor and the GPS signal the Vista can recalibrate itself to keep your height readings accurate. So if you stop for lunch and the air pressure changes your not going to start walking at a different height than when you sat down, clever. The only disappointing feature is the mapping. The preloaded European Mapbase is road mapping only and unless you live in the states the mapsource updates still aren't that detailed and are pretty pricey too.
Pros: Nicely packaged, easy to learn.
Cons: Battery life definitely not as stated, mapping disappointing.
