General comments: Leatherman were one of the first to make the multitool and are the best at it . The new wave is made from quality stainless steel making it very durable.
One great feature of this Leatherman tool is the ability to lock the blades making it much safer than other multitools.
The main tool is the needlenose pliers which fold away into the handle. In total, the Wave has approximately 18 tools.
The tools I find really handy are the tiny screwdrivers - both cross and flat head. These are the ones I always find myself using . The tool comes in a leather or nylon sheath. I've got the leather one and it seems very durable. I've had it attached to my belt for the last year.
Pros: Locking blades make the tool much safer. The small screwdrivers are really handy.
Cons: All the extra features make the tool quite heavy.

Cons: snapped the small screwdriver (flathead), sent it to leatherman UK and had it replaced, no questions asked

General comments: i bought the leatherman wave some years ago as i use the tool quite alot for work (ranger in a country park). I find that the wave has many benifits over the traditional 'swiss army knife' in that it is a proper tool. the pliers are extremely strong and have been used to cut quite thick guage fencing wire (when i left the proper pilers in the shed..Doh!), the pionts are also very strong and have been used to great effect pulling out the odd nail or two. the tool comes wit a multitude of bits that will do just about any job. there are some very sharp knife blade tucked away in the handle, all of which are locking..something my swiss army knife didnt do and i still have the scar's to prove it.
The great thing about the tool is that it is very comfortable to use, the handles have a rounded effect which makes using the pliers, when you have to apply some force, a breeze. The tool aslo includes wood and metal file, saw, large/med/small screwdrivers, bottle opener (a must), wire strippers, scissors and comes in a neat leather pouch. I carry mine every day and it has become part of my uniform
Pros: lots of applications, good quality
Cons: mine cost more than the newer models

General comments: I got a Leatherman Wave when I was on holiday in California. I managed to get one in Walmart for 40 dollers which is about 23 pounds, ok, I saved quite a bit on the UK price but i did pay 290 for the airfare. I wanted the Wave because the Leatherman tools have all you need for any outdoor activity. I mostly hill walk and camp with the odd bit of climbing thrown in and my trusty Leatherman has always provided the goods. There are 18 bits on this tool which include, Needlenose Pliers Regular Pliers ,Wire Cutters, Clip-Point Knife, Serrated Knife,Saw,Scissors, Wood/Metal File and Diamond-Coated File amongst others. There are also large and small screwdrivers which will handle most jobs but I do take care not to put too much pressure on the smaller ones as I feel they could give under some jobs. The handles are very comfortable as they have rounded edges which take the pain out of squeezing the pliers. The four blades housed in the handle can be accessed easily with a practiced thumb action and they all lock well - so no more trapping your fingers/skin when using. All the other tools lock and there is a cool 'bit system' so you an use a number of different size bits for different applications. Finally, you get to keep your Leatherman Wave in a leather pouch although I think this may be a nylon pouch if you get it in the UK
Pros: Can handle almost every job, not bad weight for the size.
Cons: Get one off ebay or from the states and save a packet.

General comments: This is a good unit for your car glove bok, but not for you pack. It's got loads of features, but the trade off is that it's very heavy. I carry the Micra with Pliers, and I'm much happier with it.
Pros: Very sharp blades. Good pliers. Loads of tools.
Cons: VERY HEAVY, you'll only use about 20% of the bits on a trek. Buy one, and leave it in your car glove box.

General comments: The leatherman new wave is a superb do-it-all tool that allows you to attempt to fix most small pieces of engineering. Now with a bit driver included, you can buy additional bits to fit in the socket driver, such as; allen keys, screwdrivers, nut sockets etc…. The quality of all Leatherman products is superb, but it comes at a high price. If you take care not to lose them, then it is a worthwhile investment, as compared to cheaper imitations it is finely engineered and will last a long time. I have used various leathermans over the years, mainly in the Army and they can be pressed to do a wide variety of jobs. They are particularly useful as electrical tools, being able to strip and cut wire and coming with fine screwdrivers. The knives stay sharp but are not really that stable for proper wood carving etc… The pliers are the real forte of this sort of device over a swiss army knife. The leatherman pliers are powerful and hold objects well. I think the leatherman crunch pliers that incorporate a mole grip type liers must be particularly good. I was bought this as a present but I would probably pay the asking price for what is essentially a quality multi-tool.
Pros: It can fix most things
Cons: cost

General comments: I used to swear by my Swiss Army knife but I have been converted. The Wave is a fantastic piece of kit that I find invaluable. I particularly like the fact that it comes with a case that attaches to my belt. The tools are very useful - often used. The tools are very sturdy even though you hardly notice the weight. As a safety feature I think the locking knives are excellent. The only negative thing I can say is that it does not have a corkscrew. My Wave is permanently by my side - not sure if it should be legally!!
Pros: Robust tools.
Light weight.
Well made
Cons: No corkscrew

General comments: Absolutely bomber product. This is standard equipment both in the hills and at work. I've used mine for everything from fixing sound systems to making pump gaskets to cutting down broken tent poles while camping.
Pros: Durable, high quality, good range of tools.
Cons: Bit too heavy to take on ultralight adventures.

General comments: Swiss army knives are something you play with when you're a kid, leatherman's are a man's tool. The locking blades are useful as they let you cut safer, but once or twice they have slipped under heavy loading.
Pros: Will not rust except bizzarely on the file. I got sea water on mine and left it and most of it was fine. Good value. The blades hardly every need sharpened, I've done mine once so far. The needlenose pliers are wee, but they come in handy. I use mine with my bike, and it can fix many jobs, even replacing spokes. The two screwdriver bits are reversible so you can pull them out and turn them round to change from philips to flat headed sides. The knife can be easily opened and closed with one hand which is a useful feature when you need to hold a piece of rope in one hand and cut with the other.
Cons: Needs oiled or will go stiff quickly. The leather case becomes all worn and doesn't look very nice after alot of use. The little wood saw is terrible and cuts slowly. Pretty heavy (about 1/2lb). Alot of tools I don't use on it like a bottle opener, all I really use is the knife, pliers, screwdrivers and can openers.
