Victorinox Climber

   User Reviews

Reviewed by Gavin Macfie (Inverness) on 2006-01-20:
General comments: I've owned a few Swiss Army knives in my time but the Victorinox Climber is the one I rely on most, whether I'm climbing or not. I used to favour the Camper but I find that I get much more use out of the Climber's scissor attachment than the saw blade on the Camper. Like all Victorinox products the design and build quality are exceptional.

Pros: This knife has all you need. Drinking requirements are taken case of by the provision of a sturdy corkscrew and bottle opener. With a bit of practise it is quick and easy to open cans using the can opener. The two blades are razor sharp and up capable of carrying out most cutting tasks short of felling trees and skinning deer. The scissors are possibly the most useful attachment, they have literally hundreds of uses, particularly when out fishing.

Cons: The one attachment I never use is the wee hook that some people would have you believe is for extracting stones from horse's hooves. It is in fact for carrying parcels that have been wrapped up with string in the old fashioned manner. This is of little use in Britain, but perhaps if one was to invest in a cuckoo clock or watch when on one's holidays in Switzerland this attachment could take the pain out of carrying it home from the shops.

General comments: Like Gavin Ive had my share of S A K 's , overall their well made and do what they say on the tin.. The climber ive had in 2 incarnations (the first got stolen).. its ideal for sking climbing and firefighting..!! Oh if you want a S A Knife get one with a lanyard ring..saves in the long run..

Pros: Solid, balanced, just the right amount of kit..without being crazy with gadgets

Cons: other people want yours..!!..

General comments: I got my first Victorinox when I was five years old (a simple, two-bladed deal, in which the "big" blade was only slightly bigger than the small blade of the Climber). Since then I have owned several others, with my last Victorinox, a Spartan, serving me well for years before being accidentally left in my backpack carry-on and thereby lost at airport security. The Climber is a great replacement for the Spartan. It has all the same features, with the addition of the parcel hook and scissors. The scissors I have used much more frequently than I would have foreseen, and like most others, the parcel hook is to me pretty much useless (if anyone can give me a use for this addition, I'd like to hear it). It has all the essentials that I look for (can opener, screwdriver, cork screw, and blades) with very little superfluousness.

Pros: Compact. Has all the essentials with the bonus of scissors. Solid and dependable.

Cons: The parcel hook. How is it ever to be useful?
