Katadyn Mini Filter Reviews

General comments: I bought this filter in replacement for my Steripen. In many ways it is a great product: it is lightweight (300g on my kitchen scales) compact - taking up little space in your pack - and very cost effective (1p per litre is what I've heard quoted). This makes it one of the most cost effective filters out there that I'm aware of. It comes supplied with two tubes (one to take water into the filter, and one for filtered water), and a float. It is easy to maintain in the field, and I have found it very reliable. There are a number of niggles, however. Firstly it takes a lot of effort to filter a litre of water, and a long time too. Secondly, the outlet tube which runs from the filter into your bottle is annoyingly short, which means that in practice it is hard for one person to use as when you pump the handle the tube tends to jump out of your bottle with the pressure of the water flowing through it. Finally, it filters bacteria, sediment etc and protozoa, but not viruses. However, I'm told that viruses are rarely an issue in the UK mountains.
Pros: Weight, size, cost effectiveness, reliability.
Cons: Outlet tube is way to short making it hard to operate by yourself, effort and time required to filter a litre of water, does not remove viruses.
