How high have you climbed? This unit will tell you your rate of ascent and much more. The eTrex Summit takes all the features of the standard eTrex unit and enhances its capabilities by the addition of an electronic compass and barometric pressure sensor. The compass provides the added benefit of being able to take bearings when standing in one spot whilst the barometric sensor gives you accurate altimeter information and barometric pressure trends which can aid weather prediction. The altitude and pressure data is shown both as a graph and numerically for ease of interpretation. The altimeter is accurate to 3 metres and a maximum altitude of over 9000 metres giving ascent/descent rate minimum and maximum elevation and total ascent/descent rate. Powered by 2 x AA batteries (not included) with up to 22 hours use (13 hours with GPS and compass). | Site | Price | Postage | Total |

General comments: Excellent piece of kit, that I have used to get me out of a tricky situation. Good to use for preparation as it links well with mapping software to download routes. Also good to record and download your days out as track taken is recorded. I particularly liked the elevation data, which shows the complete amount of ascent for your day, and records your maximum elevation. The Etrex Summit is definitely good insurance for those navigational mishaps...
Pros: Easy to use. Can be used for Walking or Mountain Biking. Waterproof. Stores up to 20 downloaded routes. Records where you been. Would definitely recommend.
Cons: Beware if using in extreme cold, as with any portable device, lithium batteries are advisable. Suffered weak GPS signal recently but it was about - 6 degrees & was using Ni-MH batteries at the time... No other complaints.

General comments: I have owned my eTrex Summit for about 2 years and I have used it for about 50 Munros and had very few problems. There is an impressive array of features available on this item but the best is the 5 digit grid ref allowing you to pinpoint your EXACT location on a map to aid your navigation.
Plotting a route into this manually is quite time consuming and rather tricky even if you are a tech geek, but once you purchase a data cable and connect this to your computer and get some software, I recommend Memory Map, it is quite simple to set out a route and upload it to the device.
The Summit also saves a track log as you go and it also has a function that allows you to track back along the exact track you made so even if you made a wrong turn, found out that you dropped something or just got lost you can always find your way back!
The track logs can be displayed on your computer software so you can see the route you plotted and the track you took on that route.
If you are a stats fan you will not be disappointed with this as it tells you everything,
Total Trip Distance (miles/Km), total time, maximum and average accent, decent, speed, maximum elevation, 12 hour barometric pressures and very important sunset times.
The summit is quite sturdy and waterproof and floats, with a backlit mono LCD display, the display looks a bit dated compared to the displays on mobile phones and other similar devices but color hi-res displays use more battery power and you will need all of this as the summits eats them at a fair rate if they are not hi power. I use 2500 mAh batteries and get about 10-12 use carrying a spare set is highly recommended.
This is a great piece of kit as an aid to your navigation but should not be relied on, always take a map.
Pros: 5 digit grid reference, lots of stats, pc connection (cable not supplied).
Cons: Eats batteries and takes a while to learn how to use due to all the functions available.

General comments: My Etrex Summit has been a useful bit of kit. I especially wanted it for the Altimeter function as this is a useful weather predicting tool along with the addition of being able to pinpoint where you are on the map with the usual GPS features. The Etrex however has proven it'self not to be too good at locating satelites when deep under the canopy of the NZ bush especially if the canopy is wet from rain ( which it often is)
In NZ this is a common failing of the Etrex series. Probably not too relavent to the UK with open moorland and mountains. So I've probably used the Altimeter function more than anything else on it. I've found the screen scratches easily but it's been water proof and tough. It does chew through the batteries but using Alkline batteries gets the best life out of it and My Petzel Myo seems not to mind the left over batteries too much as the LED's on this suck out the last of the battery charge. The lack of a data cable is a bit of a naughty marketing move by Garmin to extract a few more pounds out of you.
Pros: Altimeter, Altimeter, Altimeter...
Cons: Lack of Data cable...
